Daily news and comments on the situation in post Saddam Iraq by an Iraqi dentist living in Texas
It's also now alleged that the Houla massacre was committed by Sunni rebels against Allawite families, and that these have formerly also targeted Shia and Christian civilians.
I am amazed especially by our domestic media and their obvious agenda when it comes to Syria. Liberals to leftists are all howling for Al Assads blood and second guess nothing the syrian opposition claims. Even the leftists appear eager for "intervention" of some kind. I'm not saying Assad is some kind off poster child leader, or that his regime isn't backed by a serious repression apparatus, but the opposition doesn't look all that good either.
It's been rumored also that some Mahdi Army fighters have been sent to Syria to back the regime, while some former sunni insurgents may be fighting with the opposition:http://www.dw.de/dw/article/0,,15779420,00.html
Assad is not innocent and his thugs are indiscriminately bombing Sunni villages. His Shabiha have committed 230 cold-blooded massacres in which over 30 people have been murdered each. The Sunni rebels are no angels true, but they are fighting a rightful cause. We need to support the FSA by targeting Assad's airforce and artillery.
Those Shabiha I heard about for the first time just a few days ago. What, if anything, can you tell us about them Zeyad? Are they the "real deal" then? As in a big-numbers blood-thirsty, pro-government zealot militia? Were they known to you before? Are they anything as organised as the Fedayeen were in Iraq or is it more of an ethnic mafia gang?
Yes. they are the equivalent of Saddam's Fedayeen and far worse (I don't recall the Fedayeen murdering babies and newborns while laughing). They were always known in Syria and nearby, but we only started to hear more about their crimes in the news following the anti-government protests.
They are also mostly Alawites, with some hardcore Sunni and Christian Assad supporters.
Auction your own son? That's disgusting.
"Auction your own son? That's disgusting."Be that as it may… The opening bid is still better than double what Saddam was paying for Palestinian ‘martyrs’ against Israel prior to his own demise. "We need to support the FSA by targeting Assad's airforce and artillery."We need to find somebody willing to put a flag on that operation first. I'd reckon it a mistake to try to fly an American flag over that.
I would nominate Saudis. What else would they use that 40 billion dollar a year defense bill for? To kill sand flies?
"What else would they use that 40 billion dollar a year defense bill for?"Tryin’ to impress and score on blonde white chicks down in your neighborhood.
Well I have one word for them: Khafji
The opening bid is still better than double what Saddam was paying for Palestinian ‘martyrs’ against Israel prior to his own demise.Still digusting.
Re: American politics:After several days of staying mostly out of the light, little to nothing in the way of campaign appearances, Mitt Romney is coming back out into the light with a bus tour about the middle of this month. Interestingly, Romney's public approval ratings have progressively increased during the time he's been staying hid. It remains to be seen whether he can keep his numbers inching up if he comes back out in the light of day.
Romney is coming to SATX this week!
"Romney is coming to SATX this week!"Not much doubt but that Romney is going to win Texas. I'd guess that campaigning where it doesn't matter has to be almost as good a strategy as is not campaigning at all. And that's been seeming to work for him here lately.
Lee if you had to choose between Barak and Romney, who would it be?
"[I]f you had to choose between Barak and Romney, who would it be?"I believe the correct Kenyan spelling is ‘Barack’. Although I tend to think of them as Obama and Romney, and tend to refer to them as the same. Be that as it may…If I were obliged to make the choice today, I'd vote for Obama.
Bankster boy? What the hell for?
"Bankster boy? What the hell for?"Because, ‘neither of the above’ was not one of the options Zeyad offered me, and my policy disagreements with Romney are the rather more severe.
Here's a good article on Syria:http://atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/NF13Ak05.htmlA few of the links in the sources list are worth a look also.
Children as Human ShieldsAnd now they are talking civil war. So what did people really expect to happen? Isn't civil war what so many people wanted to avoid? Taking this a step further, what happens if fighting spreads to Lebanon or you get even more of an influx of refugees into Turkey?
Good article, Marcus."According to several reports, new anti-tank missiles transferred to the rebels from abroad have destroyed or damaged "dozens" of tanks and armored vehicles just this month ." ExcerptIt's a start...
